Some Words

My holiday was from the 19th of August 97 to the 29th of August. I booked it through Arctic Experience. The holiday I chose was tour 5c which was Given the title National Parks And Natural Wonders. This is a fair description.
The holiday started with a flight to Akureyri and an overnight stay there. The accommodation was B & B, as it was for most of the holiday. The landlady was friendly and the accommodation basic but comfortable which was again typical of the rest of the tour. The only time the accommodation was not very good was when we were in a hotel. The plan was to drive round the coast in a clockwise direction from Akureyri to Reykjavík seeing the sight along the way. The overnight stops were pre-booked but we were left to plan the days ourselves. The itinerary provided a few suggestions to help with this, but the suggestions only take part of the day to visit, giving just the right level of freedom without hassle. The car provided was a Honda Almera, group 2 in the catalogue. The roads are very quiet in this part of the island. This made it easy for me to get used to driving on the right hand side of the road. As can be seen from the photo in the link above outside the towns in this part of the island, the roads are compressed gravel. We tried to go on a Whale watching tour out of Húsavic but when we arrived at the dock the fog rolled in from the sea and the company running the boat trips cancelled the trip as it would have been unfair to take our money when we probably would not be able to see anything. This is typical of the Icelanders, the tourist industry is very young in Iceland and they have not got into the fleece the tourists mind set found in other places. The museums are small cheap and usually opened on request by someone who lives next to the museum.
The second place we stayed at was in Reykjahlið which is on the shore of lake Mývatn. The landlady of the guest house we stayed in made excellent home made bread which was cooked in a hole in the back garden. At just 1 meter down the ground is hot enough from the volcanic activity to bake the bread. The hot water here has a sulphur smell from its volcanic source. Just to the East of Reykjahlið is Námafjall. The smell of hydrogen sulphide is strong here.
